What is VET Data Streamlining?
Modernising how VET data is reported, shared and used
Australia’s VET sector is moving towards a simpler, more modern way of collecting and using training data through the VET Data Streamlining (VDS) program.
The need for change became clear in 2020, when Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) had to quickly adjust how they deliver training, assess students and provide support, all while managing remote learners and financial uncertainty. This experience highlighted the limits of existing reporting which focuses on completed units and qualifications.
VDS responds by making VET data more timely, reliable and useful. It supports more frequent reporting and better analysis, shifting away from static, point-in-time reporting towards a clearer picture of student journeys and emerging trends. It also recognises the value in student outcomes beyond full qualifications.
Delivered collaboratively by the Commonwealth, state and territory training authorities, NCVER and VET regulators, VDS introduces a new VET Information Standard, supported by updated policy, legislation and modern digital systems to replace legacy arrangements such as AVETMISS 8.0.
At the centre of this change, the VET Information Standard sets out the data, rules and processes needed for secure, and more regular reporting of training activity. Over time, this will provide richer national data, faster access to information, and stronger evidence to support learners, providers, governments and industry.
The program is being rolled out in stages to give RTOs and student management system suppliers time to transition. Once fully implemented, VDS will reduce duplication, support modern system integration, and ensure VET data better reflects what is happening on the ground, when it matters.
