Definition

Occupation identifier code uniquely identifies the type of occupation that may be expected for those undertaking a program of study. The classification is based on the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), 2024 version 1.0.

Context

Occupation identifier is used to profile programs by occupational areas.

Guidelines

Occupation identifier is the most likely occupational outcome that the program of study is designed to provide. Occupation identifier must represent the primary (or most significant) occupation type to which the program of study relates if a program of study can be classified to more than one Occupation identifier. The Occupation identifier must be consistent with the skill level of the qualification or course. A code with a comparable OSCA skill level from the same occupation group may be selected as appropriate. Occupation has five levels, and codes are preferably allocated to the full 6-digit occupation code (121131) in order to describe an individual occupation but can be allocated at a higher level where necessary. For the complete list of up-to-date OSCA codes and their descriptions, refer to the ABS website. A valid list of Occupation identifier codes is available on the VET Information Standard website. Note that if submitting a program listed on the National Training Register, this data is being supplemented with data provided by ABS.
