HOW IS IT CHANGING

VET Information Standard

Last updated: 15/07/2026

The Vocational Education and Training (VET) Information Standard is the new national data standard that is replacing the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for the VET Provider Collection.

The VET Information Standard describes what VET data is required to be collected by registered training organisations (RTOs) from students and provided to NCVER.

Sample enrolment form

To support RTOs in collecting all required VET Information Standard data from students, a new sample enrolment form is available.

Overview

From July 2026, the VET Information Standard becomes the new national data standard for vocational education and training, managed by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).

The VET Information Standard has been developed following a comprehensive review of sector information needs and introduces new and updated concepts, new and updated information elements, and a refined data structure.

The VET Information Standard defines the:

Information elements required to be captured and provided

Information element rules and conditions, and actions to resolve data quality issues

Status of student enrolment activities

Processes to streamline RTO data provision obligations

These changes will provide greater insight into the path taken by individual VET students, improve national consistency in VET data, support the provision of more timely, complete and accurate data, and offer flexibility to quickly adapt to changing sector needs.

The VET Information Standard is supported and enabled by technology that connects directly from an RTO’s student management system via Application Programming Interface (APIs) to reduce the administrative burden associated with national VET activity reporting.

Key changes and improvements

The VET Information Standard introduces a range of changes and improvements that will simplify reporting, improve data quality, and support more consistent, timely and meaningful VET information across Australia.

Changes and improvements include:

  • Clearer, consistent terminology

Supporting RTOs to more easily understand, interpret and meet reporting requirements

  • New and updated information elements

Providing richer insight into the student training journey and program-level activity.

    New and updated elements include:

    - Gender classification scheme updated to align with the ABS classifications
    - Disability classification scheme has been updated
    - Study reason introduced to capture a student’s reason(s) for undertaking study
    - Delivery mode expanded to more accurately reflect the various ways training is delivered and where students and trainers are located

  • Simplified data concepts

Improving accuracy, consistency and specificity, including through outcome identifiers and delivery mode classifications

  • A new data model

Enabling transactional reporting, greater flexibility, improved analysis capabilities, and future integration with other national data collections

  • Transactional reporting

Providing a more accurate and complete picture of a student’s training activity over time by capturing changes in training status at both program and subject levels, rather than relying on a single point-in-time snapshot

  • Data Quality rules

Providing earlier visibility of data quality issues across both government-funded and fee-for-service activity, supporting stronger data management practices and improved data integrity

  • Corrective action statements

Supporting improved data quality through clear, plain-English guidance to assist RTOs in identifying and resolving data issues.
