VET Information Standard gender classification – Support guide
The gender classification in the VET Information Standard aligns with the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) latest standards, requiring a change to the ‘non-binary’ classification. This information is provided for RTOs, particularly during the transition from AVETMISS to the VET Information Standard, as a way to respectfully collect and report accurate data about gender for continuing students.
Collecting and reporting Gender – Non-binary information
Gender classification values, particularly for ‘non-binary’, in the VET Information Standard differ from gender classifications in AVETMISS. This change may have an impact on students who are continuing their training with an RTO and have previously identified their gender as ‘other’.
Where students are continuing within their program enrolment, RTOs may wish to:
-
Ask these students to complete a new enrolment form, especially where they are enrolling in a new subject
-
Ask only those students who had previously identified as ‘other’, for their preferred gender based on the VET Information Standard classification scheme
Importantly, RTOs should not assume the student’s response. The best practice for ensuring a student’s preferred response to the gender enrolment question is captured accurately and respectfully is to periodically update continuing students’ information.
