Reporting credit transfers, recognition of prior learning and non-assessable activity

Last updated: 15/07/2026

When enrolling in VET courses, students can seek and be granted credit transfers, recognition of prior learning (RPL), or undertake training without seeking assessment.

Credit transfers

A credit transfer is an administrative process that records a training credit for a unit of competency or module previously completed successfully by a student that is granted mutual recognition.

In the VET Information Standard, this is reported in a subject enrolment as follows:

  • Student status = ‘Concluded’
  • Student status reason = ‘Credit transfer applied’

Credit transfers can only be applied to Student status reason for subject enrolments, not program enrolments.

RPL and Non-assessable activity

RPL is a process that assesses the competency of a student; the competence may have been acquired through formal, non-formal (such as previously unrecognised skills and knowledge), or informal learning. A student may successfully complete a subject enrolment by undertaking RPL.

Non-assessable activity occurs when training activity is designed so that the student is not required to undertake an assessment, or the student has chosen by mutual agreement with the training organisation at enrolment not to be assessed.

RPL and non-assessable are reported under the VET Information Standard element Subject assessment type. Subject assessment type is only captured at a subject enrolment level.

RPL would be reported in a subject enrolment as follows:
